A champion's story

One of our volunteers describes her experience as an Open Minds champion

Finding myself in an environment where my lived experience is seen as a positive, has been hugely beneficial to my recovery

Being an Open Minds champion encompasses my family’s philosophy of being kind. I have always had the understanding that kindness matters but struggled with the balance of it.

The pressure of being everything to everybody else and nothing to myself gave me such low self-esteem that I became a shadow, lurking in the darkness of self-loathing and doubt.

West Sussex Mind has taught me that I need to be as kind to myself as I am to others. The opportunity to be an Open Minds champion has given me the platform to practise this. I can help others whilst being supported by those that understand the importance of being kind to ourselves too. I feel safe when sharing my ideas, my craft and myself. Being a champion enabled me to accept kindness.
