Module Description

This module provides perspectives from people on the autism spectrum about how autism is defined and experienced. The module will enable learners to recognise the strengths and challenges experienced by many autistic people and how to respond to create enabling environments.

This course is primarily aimed at parents and/or carers of children and young people in West Sussex but other family members over 18 can also complete this course.

Course Outline

By the end of this module you should be able to:

• outline how autism has come to be defined and diagnosed

• describe common difficulties often faced by people with autism

• describe some of the strengths and unique attributes of people with autism

• challenge common stereotypes about people on the autism spectrum

• recognise how to make environments more enabling for people on the autism spectrum.

The module should take between 40-90 minutes to complete and has a range of interactive features, including:

• pre and post course assessments

• short film clips

• exercises and scenario based learning

• reflective activities

• printable information sheets

• further links and references.

It explains the common reasons why a young person might self-harm and how to respond when you suspect somebody is self-harming. It also explains best practice for approaching the subject in education and healthcare settings.

This is course is primarily for:

  • Education staff, including head teachers and governors
  • Healthcare staff
  • Care workers, social workers, and managers
  • Other professional organisations, community groups and faith organisations
  • Parents and other family members
  • (This course is primarily aimed at parents and/or carers of children and young people in West Sussex but other family members over 18 are also very welcome)

Course Overview

The course is split into two modules: An Introduction, and How to Respond.

You will learn the risk factors, the common reasons why somebody might self-harm, and how to respond to any young person who you suspect may be self-harming.

The course also discusses how to approach the issue in schools and how healthcare professionals can feel better prepared to help the young people they come into contact with.

On completion of the course, you will automatically get a certificate, containing your name, CPD hours, the date and learning objectives.

Substance misuse is a complex issue, affecting not only the individuals involved but their friends, families and the people they come into contact with.

Substance abuse can result in lowered educational outcomes, compromised health and danger to the public and affect not only the user but the people around them too.

This course offers you the chance to update your knowledge on drugs and addiction. In it you’ll learn about ‘legal highs’, why drug addiction occurs, and what the law says about possession and supply as well as the impact drugs can have, how people are treated for drug abuse and addiction and how you can best respond to someone who has problems in this area.

On completion you will automatically get a certificate, with your name, the CPD hours, the date and learning objectives.

The course contains additional resource materials, useful links and a refresher guide.

Course Outcomes

These workshops are run by The Curly Hair Project and take place throughout the autumn. It was set up by Alis Rowe who has Autism that was undiagnosed until she was an adult. She felt isolated from her peers in her childhood and teenage years, but doesn’t want other Autistic girls to go through this. She offers Autism workshops for individuals with autism and ASD, professionals and families. All the events are based on real-life experiences.

West Sussex Mind has partnered with the Curly Hair Project to offer Autism webinars FREE to parents and carer, thanks to WSCC funding.

Most people are surprised to learn that they are much more likely to meet someone thinking about suicide than someone who needs CPR. This is never more so than in these extremely challenging times. Yet suicide is preventable and with the right skills you can save a life.

Living Works START is a proven programme that can help you:

When you sign up for LivingWorks Start training, you'll learn a powerful four-step model to keep someone safe from suicide, and you'll have a chance to practice it with impactful simulations.

Safety resources and support are available throughout the program.

What will I learn?

Participants’ will become ready and confident to identify indicators of suicide thoughts, ask about suicide, state that suicide thoughts are serious, and make connections to helping resources.

You will deepen your helping skills, along with gaining increased confidence and readiness for helping individuals with suicide thoughts.

What is the course like?

Based on best practices in online curriculum development, LivingWorks Start is designed in a modular fashion, following a “teach” – “simulation” – “debrief” approach to teaching and reinforcing each key skill.1 This allows learners to increase their skills and knowledge at a comfortable pace, as well as balance their personal safety with the challenging content.

A range of teaching methods are built into the program, including:

  • Narrated coaching
  • Allowing learners to hear the lived experience of someone with thoughts of suicide
  • Text message simulations
  • Video simulations
  • Practice scenarios (video simulations and text message simulations).

The course takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. You can save your progress any time and complete the course later.

Please note you must complete the course within 60 days.
