Worthing Mayor's charity year raises thousands

August 2020

West Sussex Mind was one of three chosen charities and received a cheque from Councillor Hazel Thorpe

We received a share of the £13,500 raised by Worthing Mayor Cllr Hazel Thorpe during her year in office, which ended in May 2020.

Cllr Thorpe chose West Sussex Mind, the local branch of the NSPCC and Care for Veterans as three charities to support. During the year, the charities worked closely with Cllr Thorpe, the youth mayor and deputy youth mayor and other supporters to raise the money.

Various events were held, including quizzes, a Bohemian Rhapsody film singalong night, a dinner, raffles and an afternoon tea and entertainment event.

But perhaps the highlight was the Mayor's Variety Show at the Assembly Hall in September, masterminded by show producer Jorgen Booth who, along with all the performers, kindly gave their time and talent for free.

Cllr Thorpe said: “Being the mayor of Worthing was an amazing role, as I got to hear wonderful stories about people and it provided a unique opportunity to support them."

West Sussex Mind's community fundraising manager, Debbie Watkins, said: "We are very grateful to Cllr Thorpe and all the supporters who contributed to make this such a great fundraising year. Together, the Mayor, the charities and everyone else involved made a good team and had plenty of fun along the way."

The cheque was presented at a socially-distancing coffee and cake morning in Tarring (pictured).
