Our anti-racist commitment

West Sussex Mind publicly commits to becoming an anti-racist organisation. Find our commitment statement and our race equity and anti-racist action plan here

At West Sussex Mind, we acknowledge that systemic racism contributes to poor mental health. Not only does racism cause trauma and pain across generations, negatively impacting people's mental health, but it also prevents people from getting effective support.

In recognition of the structural and institutional nature of racism, we are committed to becoming an anti-racist organisation. This is a core part of our mission to build inclusive mental health services and reduce barriers to support - and part of our wider Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity work.

Our anti-racist commitment

West Sussex Mind is committed to becoming an anti-racist organisation. This means making anti-racism [1] and racial equity [2] part of everything we do, building an inclusive workplace and inclusive mental health services, and learning from lived experience and partners to achieve this. We will be transparent and accountable for this ongoing work.

[1] Being anti-racist is different to being non-racist. The main difference lies in action. Being non-racist is a passive stance of not personally engaging in racist acts, while being anti-racist is an active, intentional and ongoing effort to challenge, dismantle and eradicate racism in ourselves, others and in the societal systems that sustain racism.

[2] Racial equity means actively dismantling prejudices, barriers and discrimination faced by minoritised communities and people of colour. This involves providing resources and support that address historical disadvantages to ensure that everyone reaches an equal outcome. Racial equality is about opportunities, while racial equity is about outcomes.
